Description from the seller
A superb luxury edition of Medicina Antiqua (Codex Vindobonensis 93), published in 1978 by the Club du Livre (Paris) in the prestigious 'Musée du Livre' collection. This set is a faithful reproduction of the famous 13th-century manuscript kept at the National Library of Austria, one of the most richly illustrated pharmacopoeias of the medieval era.
The set includes:
The facsimile: complete reproduction of the illuminations and the Latin text. Full leather binding (fawn calfskin) richly decorated with blind tooling on the boards, featuring the motif of the Rod of Asclepius.
The commentary volume: approximately 150 pages, including the French translation by Marthe Dulong and the historical studies by Charles H. Talbot and Franz Unterkircher.
Technical details:
Edition: Limited and numbered (Copy no. 3253).
Format: In-4 (approximately 28.5 x 19.5 cm).
Pagination: About 300 pages in total for the two volumes.
Binding: Publisher's binding in deer leather (or calfskin) produced by the J. Ardouin workshops.
Condition of the lot
The set is in excellent overall condition. The interior is very fresh, without foxing or annotations. The bindings are sturdy and well preserved.
Note: The spine of the first volume (facsimile) is sun-bleached (light exposed), creating a color difference from the second volume which has retained its original color. The covers and the dry-engraved plates remain impeccable.
Fast shipping, careful and with tracking.
