Brass graphometer with lunettes signed Clerget Paris, dating 1750–1800, dimensions height 21.5 cm, width 38.5 cm, depth 15 cm, weight about 2.6 kg, optics present and functional; condition good with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
Eyepiece graphometer in brass signed Clerget Paris. An apprentice at P. A. Lasnier in 1742, he was admitted master founder in 1754.
The graphometer is an old angular measuring instrument. Mounted on a gimbal, it allows reading angles between “objects” located in the same plane.
The eyepiece graphometer gradually replaces the pinnule graphometer from the second quarter of the 18th century. This new technique enables aiming that is both farther and more precise.
The eyepiece graphometer will accompany, in particular, the cartography of France by the Cassinis (1756–1815).
The dimensions of eyepiece graphometers are much larger than those of pinnule graphometers.
The one presented:
Diameter of the baseplate 25 cm, height 15 cm
Height with gimbal: 21.5 cm
Height on stand about: 31 cm
Length of the glasses (eyepieces) 38.5 cm
Weight: 2.6 kg
The optics of the eyepieces are present and functional.
Eyepiece graphometers are much rarer than pinnule ones.
A very decorative instrument presented on its stand due to its large size and its beautiful patina. The antique stand is sold with the graphometer.
