Yet: with the gaming terminal N-Gage Nokia tries to put all these functions into a compact format—and despite some teething problems it works quite well. At launch there were some gaming highlights like Tomb Raider or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater to choose from; nowadays the game selection is fairly good, though not as abundant as on other handhelds. For that you can meet up with other N-Gage owners and compete against each other via Bluetooth, or you can log into the N-Gage Arena and play against N-Gage fans around the world.
The display is very well done, bright and well suited for gaming — but you have to get used to the portrait orientation first. Nokia not only added an MP3 player but also a radio, so with the N-Gage it really never gets boring. The organizer features are also commendable, even though the menu navigation is oddly complicated and the software crashes from time to time.
To the negative aspects: Holding the N-Gage to the ear with its narrow side is certainly something one has to get used to; moreover you constantly leave annoying fingerprints on the display. Overall the casing is too large to carry around in your shirt pocket just like that. The battery doesn't last particularly long, especially if you play a lot (about three hours of uninterrupted gaming). The biggest drawback, however: in order to change the games you have to open the phone and remove the battery. Additionally, the N-Gage does not have a digital camera.
But despite some flaws, the N-Gage is a good all-around device for those who don't want to carry a mobile phone, an MP3 player, a radio, and a game handheld separately. However, one can hope for a successor model that you can reasonably hold to the ear and in which you can comfortably swap your game cards. --Ines Heidrich
