Nautical ship's compass in a copper housing with an oil lamp, dating from the 20th century and likely from Genoa, Italy, weighing about 3.2 kg with dimensions 28 × 24 × 25 cm, in good vintage condition with minor patina and spots.
Description from the seller
Nautical ship’s compass in a copper housing with oil lamp – presumably Italy (Genoa) – 20th century
Characterful and solidly built nautical compass in a copper/brass-colored cylindrical housing on a wooden base. The whole has a pronounced maritime appearance and is executed in a classic ship’s compass construction.
The angled viewing glass opening provides a view of the freely hanging compass card with degree scale and wind directions. On the card, at the south marker, the name “Genova” is listed, indicating Italian origin or production (Genoa). At the north marker is “Ferro,” a nautical reference to magnetic iron correction – a term used in maritime navigation instruments.
On the side there is an integrated oil lamp with a hinged door, intended for nighttime reading on board. The lamp unit is still present in the compartment, which adds to the authenticity of the piece.
The construction, terminology, and execution suggest that this is a functional nautical instrument, possibly used on a ship or manufactured for maritime education (for example, a nautical school).
Condition:
Good vintage condition with natural patina and signs of use appropriate for age. Light oxidation and discoloration present. Glass intact. Internal mechanism present. Not tested for navigational accuracy.
A remarkable object for collectors of nautical instruments, maritime history, or as atmospheric decor with a strong authentic character.
