Description from the seller
Antique painting, oil on panel, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and Saint John the Evangelist.
Important devotional painting depicting the Crucifixion, with the sorrowful Virgin, Mary Magdalene kneeling at the Foot of the Cross, and Saint John the Evangelist. The composition, laid out according to a symmetric and solemn schema, reflects the models of late Renaissance Central European painting in the Catholic, post-Tridentine context.
The figures, characterized by oval faces, gathered expressions and structured drapery, show affinities with production from the Germanic and Danubian area between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The Christ, elongated and idealized, is placed on a dark background with dramatic clouds, following a devotional language typical of the Central European culture of the period. In the center of the composition, at the lower part, there is a painted and gilded heraldic shield, party, depicting on one side three locks arranged two above and one below, and on the other side a red eagle with one head. This emblem is plausibly referable to the commissioner of the work, presumably a member of a bourgeois or administrative milieu tied to religious institutions of the imperial area. The presence of the shield confirms the work’s nature as a private or votive commission destined for a chapel or devotional space.
Technically, the painting is executed on panel with a dark prepared ground and a compact painting layer, following a practice widespread in German and Austrian painting between the 16th and 17th centuries.
A work of notable historic and devotional interest, enriched by the presence of the heraldic shield, which documents its origin and the commissioning context.
The painting presents itself in good overall condition, with a uniform painted surface and readable imagery. Localized restoration interventions are visible, particularly in the lower area; these elements do not compromise the overall usability of the image. The craquelure is homogeneous and attributable to the period, with no signs of active flaking. The panel appears structurally stable; a crack is noted in the lower right part and a small gap in the lower left corner, both compatible with the age of the support. No active detachment of the pictorial layer is detected.
Overall the work is solid, well preserved and with a coherent historical patina that testifies to its authenticity and natural conservation evolution over time.
The painting is accompanied by a classical-style frame of a fairly recent era, with minor defects noted. It is included as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not constitute grounds for complaint or cancellation of the order.
Measurements of the painting: 62 x 47 cm - Frame measurements: 76 x 61 cm
The work is accompanied by a photographic certificate of authenticity, as required by current law.
