Beautiful Russian brass icon with multicolored enamel, depicting Saint George the Great Martyr on horseback in combat with the dragon. This depiction belongs to the most beloved saint iconography within the Russian Orthodox tradition.
Description
The icon shows Saint George as a rider-saint, seated on a galloping horse. With a raised lance he pierces the dragon that writhes under the horse. The dynamic composition symbolizes the triumph of the Christian faith over evil.
Georgius is depicted with a halo as a sign of holiness. His posture is strong and purposeful, while the horse is rendered in an upward motion. The dragon lies defeated under the hooves, with outstretched wings and an open mouth.
The background is executed in contrasting red and blue enamel, which visually enhances the scene and adds depth to the relief. At the top there is a Church Slavonic inscription with the name of the saint. The icon is equipped with an integrated hanging loop and was intended as a household icon or personal devotion object. Such enameled brass icons were manufactured in the 19th century in Russia and were popular as protective icons, particularly among soldiers and travelers.
