Russisch messing icoon Heilige Georgius en de Draak 19e eeuw, Het emaille is in de 20e eeuw toegevoegd

Fraai Russisch messing icoon met meerkleurig email, voorstellend de Heilige Grootmartelaar Georgius te paard in gevecht met de draak. Deze voorstelling behoort tot de meest geliefde heiligeniconografie binnen de Russisch orthodoxe traditie. 

Omschrijving
Het icoon toont de heilige Georgius als ruiterheilige, gezeten op een galopperend paard. Met geheven lans doorboort hij de draak die onder het paard kronkelt. De dynamische compositie symboliseert de overwinning van het christelijk geloof op het kwaad.
Georgius is afgebeeld met nimbus als teken van heiligheid. Zijn houding is krachtig en doelgericht, terwijl het paard in opwaartse beweging is weergegeven. De draak ligt verslagen onder de hoeven, met gespreide vleugels en geopende muil.

De achtergrond is uitgevoerd in contrasterend rood en blauw email, wat de voorstelling visueel versterkt en diepte geeft aan het reliëf. Bovenaan bevindt zich een kerkslavische inscriptie met de naam van de heilige. Het icoon is voorzien van een geïntegreerd ophangoog en was bedoeld als huisicoon of persoonlijk devotieobject.Dergelijke geëmailleerde messing iconen werden in de 19e eeuw in Rusland vervaardigd en waren populair als beschermingsicoon, met name onder soldaten en reizigers. De heilige Georgius werd beschouwd als beschermer in strijd en tegenspoed.

In goede conditie met passende ouderdoms en gebruikssporen. Het email vertoont lichte slijtage en enkele kleine onregelmatigheden passend bij de leeftijd. Het messing heeft een natuurlijke patina. Zie foto’s voor een eigen indruk.
