Description from the seller
Antique luxury photo album “Stolzenfels” – Gilded edges – Neo-Gothic – c. 1850
Very decorative and well-made 19th-century photo album with a richly decorated neo-Gothic front cover, featuring a bas-relief image of Schloss Stolzenfels (Germany). The binding displays refined ornamentation with floral motifs and four decorative studs on the corners. Original brass clasp present.
The outer edges of the text block are finished with gilded trims, indicating a luxuriously produced item. This gilding served not only to embellish but also to protect against dust and external influences.
This type of album was used in the late 19th century for storing cartes de visite and cabinet photos. The sturdy cardboard pages are equipped with beautifully printed decorative frames with cutouts for portrait photographs.
Features
• Period: ca. 1850–1900
• Style: Neo-Gothic / Historicism
• Front with relief and inscription “Stolzenfels”
• Gilded page edges
• Original brass clasp
• Thick cardboard photo pages with ornament print
• Empty album (no photos)
Condition
In antique, used condition. Wear to the binding and discoloration of the pages appropriate for the age. Some signs of use and light damage to the spine. See photos for a true impression of the condition.
A beautiful collectible from the heyday of early photography — historically interesting as well as especially decorative.
