Set of seven Japanese lacquer soup bowls (urushi wan) in black exterior, red interior with gold maki-e pine design, made of wood in Japan, dating from 1970–1980 and in good vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Set of 7 Japanese Lacquer Soup Bowls with Gold Maki-e Pine Design – Black & Red Urushi
This is a refined set of seven Japanese lacquer soup bowls (urushi wan), beautifully finished in glossy black lacquer on the exterior and vivid vermilion red lacquer on the interior.
Each bowl features an elegant gold maki-e design depicting a stylized pine tree and a small pavilion landscape motif. The contrast between the deep black lacquer, the warm red interior, and the delicate gold decoration creates a striking and sophisticated aesthetic typical of traditional Japanese tableware.
The lightweight construction suggests a wooden base coated with multiple layers of natural lacquer. Such bowls were commonly used for miso soup or clear broth in formal dining settings and festive occasions. The timeless pine motif symbolizes longevity and resilience, making this set both decorative and functional.
A harmonious and elegant set suitable for collectors of Japanese lacquerware or for refined table presentation.
