Deze imposante dekselvaas, uitgevoerd in polychroom beschilderd aardewerk, is een vootreffelijk voorbeeld van de 19e eeuwse herwaardering van de klassieke Rouen-faïence. Het object is vormgegeven als een balustervaas en rust op een verhoogd voetstuk (piédouche), waarbij de rijke decoratie onmiddellijk de aandacht trekt.

Deze vaas is uitgevoerd in de karakteristieke Style rayonnant of festonstijl, herkenbaar aan het fijnmazige geometrische vlechtwerk en de symmertrische florale motieven in de klassieke combinatie van diepblauw en ijzerrood op een witte achtergrond. De schouder van de vaas wordt gesierd door twee platisch gevormde mascarons in de vorm van kindergezichtjes, die tevens dienstdoen als handvaten.

Bijzonder aan dit exemplaar is de functie als potpourri-vaas. Zowel de hals als het deksel zijn voorzien van verfijnd ajourwerk, waardoor de geur van gedroogde bloemen en kruiden subtiel in de ruimte kon worden verspreid. Het deksel wordt bekroond door een fraai gemodelleerde putto die op een blauwe bol rust, een veelvoorkomend decoratief element in de Hollandse keramiektraditie. Deze balusteraas is volledig gebaseerd op een model dat werd vervaardigd door De Delftse Pauw, een beroemde 17e eeuwse plateelbakker. Hoewel de decoratie strikt de canon van het 18e eeuwse Rouen volgt, is de vormgeving een directe hommage aan de modellen van de Delftse keramiekateliers. Deze versmelting van stijlen was een specialiteit van de Desvres-ateliers, die hiermee de twee meest prestigieuze Europese faïence-tradities in één monumentaal object verenigden.
