Description from the seller

Crucifix of the 19th century, named Nkangi Kiditu ("Christ protector"), is a fundamental piece of the syncretic art of the Kingdom of the Congo. These works were not simple objects of devotion, but insignia of authority and power used by local chiefs, functioning as bridges between the political hierarchy and the spiritual world of the ancestors.

Christ depicted with stylized ethnic features, elongated limbs, and a purity cloth (pagne) striped. At the base of the cross there is a chevron mark, a recurring motif in Bakongo art that typically symbolizes the crossing of paths between the world of the living and the dead.

Made in copper alloy with natural dark patina and traces of surface oxidation consistent with age. Lost-wax casting.

In excellent condition.
Dimensions: 9x3 cm
Weight: 42 grams

Origin: from auction house in the Netherlands

Will be shipped protected and with tracking number
