Marine telescope, Field telescope, Refracting telescope - 1850-1900

Description A fine and unusual mid-19th-century single-draw telescope. Unlike the more common mahogany or leather-clad brass telescopes of the era, this instrument features a primary barrel made from a single, beautifully polished piece of natural horn. The horn exhibits a wonderful translucent quality and a warm honey-colored patina with natural graining. The fittings (eyepiece and objective rim) is made of silver, which provides a sharp contrast to the organic barrel. Condition Report Body: The horn barrel is in excellent antique condition with no significant cracks or splits, which is rare for organic materials of this age. Optics: The objective lens and eyepiece are present. The glass appears intact, though as with most antique optics, there is some internal dust and slight haze consistent with age. Mechanics: The draw tube moves smoothly. Patina: Minor age-related wear and tarnishing to the metal fittings, adding to its authentic character.
