The Commodore 128 had two microprocessors: a MOS 8502 (this was the same as the MOS 6510 microprocessor of the Commodore 64, but could run at 1 and at 2 MHz) and a Z80. The Z80 was necessary to run the CP/M operating system.

The C128 also had two video chips: one that was the same as the C64's and thus suitable to connect to a television, and one that supported resolutions of 640 x 200 pixels and that could only be connected to computer monitors. Together with two more I/O building blocks needed, among other things, to drive disk drives, the computer became relatively complex and expensive.

The C128 also had a SID sound chip built in for audio playback.
