Ce masque provient de l'aire limitrophe entre les Bushong (Kuba) méridionaux et les Kete septentrionaux de la province du Kasaï. Lié aux esprits de la nature ( ngesh chez les Kuba et mungish chez les Kete), il intervenait lors des rituels d'initiation, et "sa force était associée à celle de la forêt et des esprits qui y habitent, au sens de la position dominante des hommes . Sa - manifeste - très grande ancienneté le lieu parmi ces "masques Kuba anciens d'une qualité exceptionnelle, dont certains témoins ont miraculeusement survécu"
