Matcha tea bowl (chawan) in stoneware, 7.5 cm high, 10.5 cm diameter, 370 g, from Japan and dating to 1900–2000, with a two-tone glaze in forest green and turquoise and a green-black interior, in good condition with minor signs of aging and supplied with its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
Description from the seller
Item Description
This exquisite chawan (matcha tea bowl) comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako), confirming this as a genuine named-artist work. The bowl displays a masterfully composed two-tone glaze in deep forest green and turquoise, with characteristic horizontal throwing marks visible across the upper body — a technique that creates a vivid sense of movement and depth. The upper portion features a glossy, richly layered green glaze with cascading yellow-green highlights that evoke flowing rain or the shimmer of forest light, while the lower body transitions into a matt, tactile turquoise glaze through a dramatic, organically jagged glaze boundary — a striking natural effect born of the kiln's unpredictable fire. The interior is finished in a deep, glassy green-black glaze, providing the perfect visual contrast for the vibrant color of whisked matcha. The foot ring is clean and neatly trimmed, with the raw clay body visible in the traditional kōdai recess. A refined and expressive work that will elevate any tea ceremony setting.
