Constance Rousseau

A rare and authentic antique wooden measuring stick used in traditional cooperage (barrel making). Crafted from hardwood and fitted with a brass end cap, this specialised tool features clearly printed scales including “Barrel” and “Half Barrel” measurements, used for gauging cask dimensions and capacity.

The ruler is marked “H. Rider, Maker, Bolton”, indicating British manufacture. The presence of these cooper’s measurement scales confirms its use in a professional workshop setting rather than as a standard measuring rule. With a length of approximately 92 cm, this is a non-standard measuring stick, further supporting its specialist purpose. The typography, construction and materials date it to circa 1900.

The item remains in good antique condition with visible signs of age and use. The wood shows surface wear and small imperfections consistent with age. There is some fading to the markings, but they remain legible. The brass end cap shows light wear and is firmly attached.

A highly collectible and uncommon tool from the traditional trade of cooperage, ideal for collectors of antique tools, industrial heritage, or measuring instruments.
