The Hinamatsuri (雛祭り Hina-matsuri), also known as the 'Doll Festival' or 'Girls' Festival', is a Japanese holiday that falls on March 3, i.e., the third day of the third month. On this occasion platforms are prepared with a red carpet (緋毛氈 hi-mōsen), on which is displayed an ensemble of ornamental Japanese dolls (雛人形 hina-ningyō) depicting the Emperor, the Empress, and other court figures. The white lacquered wooden bases are from a later period.
