Bronze and brass, with glass, fluid compass from the 1950s–1960s to 1960s–1970s, mounted in a cardan suspension to stay level on a moving ship, signed by W. Bollwinkel on the rim with Hamburg on the compass rose, produced by C. Plath / W. Bollwinkel, in good used condition with a natural patina, diameter 20 cm, weight 7500 kg.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and authentic liquid-filled compass in a bronze/brass finish, mounted in a gimbal suspension so that the instrument stays horizontal as the ship moves. This type of compass was used on smaller seagoing ships and fishing vessels as a reliable navigation instrument.
On the rim is the signature W. Bollwinkel, with on the compass rose the designation Hamburg and the hallmark of the well-known German manufacturer C. Plath. This points to production or supply via Hamburg, the center of maritime instrument making.
The compass is in good and working condition: the dial rotates smoothly and stably. The brass housing has a beautiful, natural patina.
A decorative and functional maritime object, very suitable for collectors of nautical instruments or as a stylish interior piece.
The diameter of the compass is 20 cm.
Many photos added so the condition of the compass can be well assessed. Also a photo with a pen so the size can be clearly determined.
Photos are part of the description.
The compass will be very well packaged, insured and sent by registered mail with a track and trace code.
