Remarkable, richly illustrated history of the famous French arms company from Châtellerault. Founded in 1819, it was initially specialized in edged weapons, but from 1830 onward it also began producing firearms, including the famous Chassepot rifle.
Dust jacket illustrated with a tear on the spine and along the edge of the fourth; interior excellent.

Facsimile edition on the history of the Royal Arms Factory of Saint-Etienne, founded in 1765 by decree of King Louis XV.
In the late 1800s the factory employed over 10,000 workers and nearly 9,000 machines, enabling it to produce more than 1,600 rifles per day, in addition to revolvers, carbines, muskets, swords and bayonets. In 1894 the factory became a state-owned enterprise under the control of the War Ministry.
