Description from the seller
Dynamic Rationalism: Extendable Table '778' – Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina Design
We present at auction the 778 table, a pinnacle of collaboration between Afra and Tobia Scarpa and Cassina. Designed in 1975, this model represents a masterpiece of cabinetmaking that fuses the rigour of rationalist design with extraordinary versatility of use.
Design and History: The Genius of the Top and the Nobility of Walnut
The 778 table is a homage to mechanical precision and the deep materials culture that characterizes the work of the two Venetian designers:
The Culture of Walnut: Scarpa’s work stands out for a particular attention to the use of noble walnut wood. In this project, the wood is not merely a veneer but the structural soul of the piece; the natural grain is enhanced by the wide surfaces of the top, celebrating that warm, solid materiality that has become the calling card of their most refined design.
Intelligent Modularity: The functional heart of the project lies in the ingenious bookfold opening system. Thanks to ultra-precise concealed hinges, the top can double its surface with a simple, fluid gesture, transforming a compact square into a broad rectangular table.
Rational Aesthetics: Characterized by clean lines and solid volumes, the table embodies a philosophy where beauty resides in the perfection of the join and the supreme quality of timber workmanship.
Lot Conditions: Excellent Conservational State and Patina
The lot presents in excellent use condition, cared for with the attention a piece of such importance deserves:
Surfaces: The walnut wood surfaces have been treated with professional-grade products to nourish the fibers and revive the grain. They show light signs of age and use, which do not detract from their aesthetics but certify their originality and precious vintage patina.
Mechanical: The bookfold opening system has been tested and is perfectly functional. The hinge movement is smooth and precise, a sign of impeccable conservation.
Sturdiness: The structure is robust, solid and free from structural defects.
