A genuine bronze/brass and glass liquid compass with a cardan suspension to keep it level, dating to the 1950s–1960s (also listed as 1960s–1970s), signed W. Bollwinkel on the rim with Hamburg markings and produced by C. Plath, in good, working condition; diameter 20 cm, overall dimensions about 24 x 24 x 10 cm.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and authentic bronze/brass surface-mounted fluid compass, mounted in a gimbal suspension so the instrument stays horizontal as the ship moves.
This type of compass was used on smaller seafaring vessels and fishing boats as a reliable navigation instrument.
On the edge is signed W. Bollwinkel, with the compass rose bearing the designation Hamburg and the mark of the well-known German manufacturer C. Plath. This indicates production or delivery via Hamburg, the center of maritime instrument making.
The compass is in good working condition: the needle rotates smoothly and steadily. The bronze housing has a beautiful, natural patina.
A decorative and functional maritime object, very suitable for collectors of nautical instruments or as a stylish interior piece.
The diameter of the compass is 20 cm.
Many photos have been added so the condition of the compass can be assessed well. Also a photo with a pen so the size can be determined accurately.
Photos are part of the description.
The compass will be very well packed, insured, and mailed by registered post with a track and trace code.
