Description from the seller
Authentic gantry-style nautical compass by E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Boston, a distinguished piece of American maritime instrumentation from the late 19th century and early 20th century, datable approximately between 1890 and 1910.
The piece preserves its original brass and metal construction, mounted on a sophisticated gimbal suspension system designed to keep the compass permanently level despite the motion of the ship. This system was indispensable in professional navigation and is one of the features most appreciated by collectors of historical nautical instruments.
The dial retains the original inscriptions “RITCHIE BOSTON” and “U.S. NAVY”, elements that reinforce the historical and collectible interest of the piece. Instruments manufactured by E.S. Ritchie & Sons were widely used on civil, commercial and military vessels, enjoying an extraordinary reputation for precision and reliability.
The compass has been carefully professionally cleaned, while fully respecting its historic patina and preserving the authentic character of the instrument. The original wooden case presents an attractive natural aging and signs of use consistent with more than a century of age.
Conservation and shipping condition: The compass is delivered without damping fluid, in accordance with usual international transport requirements for this type of instrument. This circumstance does not affect the authenticity, historical value, or collectible appeal of the piece.
This is an instrument of notable presence and great decorative appeal, ideal for collections of navigation, naval history, maritime exploration or nautical, industrial and vintage style decoration.
