Description from the seller
An exceptional set of the three volumes of the eighteenth‑century milestone work on military engineering, "Architectura Militar de Antoni", translated by Mathias Joze Dias Azedo. Printed in Lisbon in 1795 by the prestigious Typografia Regia Silviana.
Important: Volume II is missing plate II; otherwise, the volumes are complete and in good condition, with light damp spots.
The photos are part of the description.
What makes this set truly special is its magnificent period leather binding (probably tafilete) in dark red. Each volume features intricate gilt tooling on the spine and the plates, including the Portuguese royal shield, which suggests a luxury binding or, given the dedication to the then Prince of Brazil D. João (the future D. João VI), even a copy of noble provenance.
Volume I: Published in 1795 (M.DCC.LXXXXV). Treatise on the "Fortification Regular". Translated by Mathias Joze Dias Azedo. Includes the dedication to Prince D. João.
18[h]+278[h]+23[lam]
Volume II: Published in 1790. Focused on the "Attack and Defense of Regular Fortresses". Translated by Pedro Joaquim Xavier.
28[h]+354[h]+11[lam]
Volume III: Published in 1790. Addresses the "Fundamental Principles of Fortification". Translated by Joze Lane.
