The Minitel (for "Interactive Medium by digitization of telephone information") is a type of computer terminal intended for connection to the French Vidéotex service named Télétel, commercially operated in France between July 1980 and June 30, 2012. It was the first service in the world to give access to a variety of services prefiguring those of the future Internet, and the most developed in 1990. It uses for this the French X.25 Transpac network, which itself foreshadows the future Internet transmission infrastructure. It has seen considerable success and remained in use for a long time, including in competition with the Internet.
