The Wii (/wiː/ WEE) is a home video game console developed and released by Nintendo. It was released on November 19, 2006 in North America and in December 2006 in most other regions of the world. It is Nintendo's fifth major home console, following the GameCube, and belongs to the seventh generation of consoles, along with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata focused on appealing to a broader audience through innovative gameplay rather than competing with Microsoft and Sony on raw power. Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda led the development, which initially carried the codename Revolution. The Wii emphasized new forms of interaction, notably via the wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which featured motion sensing, could recognize gestures, and functioned as a pointing device. The Wii was Nintendo's first console with native internet connectivity, enabling online gaming and digital distribution via the Wii Shop Channel. It also supported wireless connectivity with the portable Nintendo DS for certain games. Early models were backward compatible with GameCube games and accessories. Nintendo later released cheaper revisions: the RVL-101, without GameCube compatibility, and the Wii Mini, which lacked features such as online connectivity and SD card storage.
Because Nintendo placed less emphasis on raw power, the Wii and its games were cheaper to produce than those of competitors. The console was hugely popular at launch and, in some markets, hard to find. Wii Sports, a game bundled with the console, became the Wii’s flagship title, while new entries in the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokémon and Metroid series further increased its popularity. Within a year, the Wii became the seventh generation's best-selling console and a social phenomenon in many countries. Total Wii sales topped 101 million units, making it Nintendo's best-selling home console until it was surpassed in 2021 by the Nintendo Switch. As of 2025, it is the seventh-best-selling console of all time.
The Wii repositioned Nintendo as a major player in the home video game console market. The popularity of motion-controlled games led Microsoft and Sony to develop Kinect and PlayStation Move. The Wii achieved Nintendo's goal of appealing to a broader audience on home consoles, but it simultaneously alienated hardcore gamers. In an effort to win back this key audience, Nintendo released their next home console in 2012, the Wii U, which, however, did not become a success. The Wii was discontinued in October 2013, although the Wii Mini remained in production for a few more years and some online services persisted until 2019.
