Description from the seller
An important and rare original seventeenth-century baroque-style aquatint and engraving entitled "The Last Supper." This rare print represents plate no. 52 of the iconic masters’ series "Sacrae Historiae Acta a Raphaele Urbin in Vaticanis Xystis..." (commonly known as Raphael’s Bible), meticulously engraved and published in Rome in 1649 by the celebrated French master Nicolas Chaperon (1612–1655). Prints and principals Chaperon, a renowned pupil of Simon Vouet who moved to Rome to work with Nicolas Poussin, devoted years to reproducing the monumental biblical frescoes executed by Raphael Sanzio’s workshop (c. 1517–1519) in the Raphael Loggia’s ceiling inside the Vatican Palace. Prints and principals +2The lower margin bears the complete original inscriptions engraved on the plate, Left side: "R.V.I. Acronimo di Raphael Urbinas Inventor (a conferma della paternità del disegno originale di Raffaello). Central block: Latin Evangelical verse from Mark 14: "Discumbentibus et edentibus discipulis, dixit Jesus: unus ex uobis me proditurus est. Marc. XIV." Right side: "N.C.F." acronimo di Nicolas Chaperon Fecit, immediately followed by the plate’s original number "52". John Jay Homestead. This unique octagonal composition is a splendid testimony to the artistic bridge between the Italian High Renaissance and the French Baroque era.
