Giovanni Fattori, born in Livorno on September 6, 1825 and died in Florence on August 30, 1908, was a painter and etcher and is considered among the finest Italian artists—Major exponent of the Macchiaioli, and his specialties were landscapes and rural scenes as well as military subjects. This engraving is an aquatint print on a sheet measuring 29.5 x 22.5 cm; with a burl wood frame it measures 32 x 25 cm.

The title is 'Horse with a Soldier at the Side' (the horse bears military harness) while on the left side the soldier walks.
