Description from the seller
Walker’s Ship-Log Cherub III – Solid Brass – England ca. 1945–55
For sale: an extraordinary historic navigation instrument: a ship log (Ship-Log) original from the prestigious British firm Thomas Walker & Son Ltd. It is the iconic Cherub Mark III model, manufactured in Birmingham in the mid-20th century.
This device was responsible for measuring distance traveled and the ship’s speed using a precision mechanical system.
DETAILS OF THE REGISTRATOR (Main Body):
Brass solid piece with an exceptional natural patina that certifies its age. It has not been polished to preserve its collectible value.
Authenticity marks: Includes the anchor logo (Trade Mark T.W.) and the manufacturer’s historic address: 58, Oxford St. Birmingham.
Serial Number: AM 3310 (punched engraving).
Dial: White ceramic dial in perfect condition, protected by its original glass. Includes the main 100-mile dial and two subsidiary dials for hundreds and units.
Technical inscriptions: Retains all engraved maintenance instructions ("Use Walker's Solidified Oil").
Condition: The exterior mechanism rotates and the brass tilting support is operational. Mounted on a display wooden base.
DETAILS OF THE ROTOR (Propeller):
Includes a four-blade brass rotor with a hydrodynamic design.
Transparency note: This rotor bears no visible maker’s marks or serial numbers. Therefore, although it is the technical model compatible with the Mark III system, it cannot be determined whether it is from the same era or the same manufacturer as the registrator. Aesthetically it shows patina and wear very similar to the main body.
