Etching by Willem de Zwart titled Bos, a landscape in a naturalist-impressionist style, signed at lower right, 12 × 16 cm image and 37 × 42 cm framed, from the 19th century Netherlands, with frame, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
The work concerns an etching of a landscape.
Wilhelmus Henricus Petrus Johannes (Willem) de Zwart (The Hague, 16 May 1862 – idem, 11 December 1931) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, etcher, watercolorist and ceramic painter. His oeuvre encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and still lifes, executed in a naturalistic-impressionist style. Within the Hague School De Zwart occupied a noteworthy position thanks to his exuberant and powerful use of color. At the same time, his work shows a clear affinity with Amsterdam Impressionism, in which city life and the human figure are central. In his choice of subject he aligns with the Hague School, while his style and palette bring him closer to the Amsterdam impressionists. For this reason he is also called the “Hague Breitner.”
Works by Willem de Zwart can be found, among others, in the collections of the Kunstmuseum The Hague and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
