Morley PFL Pro Flanger – Tel-Ray Chrome Era – Vintage USA flanger with optical foot control
Description
Offered: an original Morley PFL Pro Flanger, model PFL, from the classic Tel-Ray / Morley “Chrome Era.”
This is not a compact standard flanger pedal, but a large and exceptionally versatile vintage effect from the period when Tel-Ray Electronics produced the well-known Morley effects in the characteristic chrome housings. The heavy chrome enclosure, wide rubber treadle, and industrial build quality give this pedal a distinctive 1970s look and make it immediately recognizable as a genuine early Morley.
The Pro Flanger combines a rich flanger tone with optically controlled foot operation. This makes it suitable not only for classic, wide, floating flanger sounds but also for many more direct, manually controlled sweeps. In Auto mode the pedal determines the speed of the automatic modulation; in Foot mode the sweep can be controlled directly with the treadle. This makes the PFL especially expressive and much more versatile than a conventional flanger.
The controls offer extensive tonal possibilities:
Phase Travel determines the depth and extent of the flanger effect.
Harmonic Emphasis increases harmonic emphasis and resonance, from subtle filtering to pronounced, rich flanger textures.
Center sets the midpoint of the sweep.
The extra tone switch selects two clearly different character settings: a fuller, richer sound or a more hollow, synthetic sound.
With the choice between Auto and Foot the user can switch between automatic modulation and direct foot-controlled control.
This enables not only classic “jet plane” style flanger sounds, but also chorus-like motion, rotating textures, resonant comb-filter effects, and experimental, manually shaped modulation.
The Morley PFL is an original Tel-Ray-era design from the period before the later compact Morley series. The Tel-Ray/Morley product line from these years is known for its large chrome housings, optical control, and robust construction. This type of Pro Flanger is therefore interesting for players seeking a pronounced vintage modulation sound as well as collectors of early American effect pedals.
Serial number 200840. Based on the Tel-Ray chrome-era design and the PFL documentation, this is very likely a unit from circa 1978–1981.
Equipped with an original Reticon SAD1024 BBD chip, a beloved analog delay chip that contributes to the rich, warm and pronounced vintage flanger tone of this Tel-Ray Morley pedal.
Power
This is a properly powered vintage effect pedal. Only use the mains voltage specified on the nameplate or at the rear of the pedal. Check carefully before use; older Tel-Ray Morley pedals come in different voltage versions. This is the 220-volt version.
Condition
The pedal is offered in the condition clearly visible in the photos. Please view all images carefully; they are an explicit part of the description and show the chrome enclosure, rubber treadle, knobs, switches, jacks, power cable/nameplate, and any signs of use or age.
Operation
The pedal has been tested and functions properly. Signal passes through correctly, the effect engages and disengages correctly, Auto and Foot modes function, the foot control responds properly, and the controls operate as intended.
