Description from the seller

2x Meiji-period frontispieces (kuchi-e) by Tomioka Eisen (1864 – 1905)

Tomioka Eisen (富岡 永洗) was one of the most successful and popular Japanese illustrators of the late Meiji period. He was born in 1864 as Tomioka Hidetaro in Nagano Prefecture and was the eldest son of a samurai retainer.

Print above: A crying boy and his mother (originally published as a kuchi-e frontispiece illustration for the novella "Bachi Atari" / "The Cursed" in the literary magazine Bungei Kurabu). Published ca-1900.

Print below: Receiving or entertaining a guest at an inn ("Entertaining a Visitor" / "Guests at Inn"), where a servant brings light garments. A atmospheric print of a party in a traditional Japanese interior where tea is being drunk and a guest relaxes with a pipe. Published ca-1900.

Kuchi-e (口絵, literally "mouth pictures"). These were high-quality, four-fold woodblock prints that were included as frontispieces (for the front) in popular novels and magazines such as Bungei Kurabu to give the reader a visual preview of the story.

Good/acceptable condition – print with top and bottom edges trimmed. Dimensions: 22.4 x 28.3 cm. Will be sent by registered mail with a tracking code. Fast shipping.
