Two ship capstans from the 19th century, made of oak wood and wrought iron, of industrial design and Dutch origin, with the larger about 27 cm high, 16 cm wide and 10 cm deep weighing 2.3 kg and the smaller about 18 cm high, 9.5 cm wide and 6.5 cm deep weighing 1 kg; in reasonable condition from heavy use with possible small parts missing.
Description from the seller
Two very beautiful and decorative pulleys. The largest of these industrial pulleys probably dates from the 19th century and the small one is somewhat younger (likely from the mid-20th century). The large one has two wooden wheels and a peculiar pear shape. You don’t see that often. Whether this pulley was used in the harbor for loading and unloading, or hung on a ship, is not clear. The wheels still turn smoothly but one of the sides has a crack. There are also a few cracks running through. The old-fashioned repair with a flat piece of iron, binding one side together, is very decorative. A typical way people used to functionally repair wooden objects; very beautiful! This pulley is about 27 cm high, 16 cm wide, 10 cm deep and weighs 2.3 kg. The pulley still works, but the outer edges are so fragile that you cannot hang heavy loads on it. It will therefore mainly be used as a decorative item, although you could of course hang a lamp on it, or kitchen equipment. The small one weighs 1 kg and is 18 cm high, 9.5 cm wide and 6.5 cm deep. This pulley has one wooden wheel and an iron pin attached to the eye, 26 cm long. This pin has been inserted somewhere. At the end of the pin there are three holes. With this it was perhaps secured. This pulley is still in very good condition. It is much smaller than the other, but could still be used 100% as a pulley. With the weathered and partly white-painted pin, this pulley is a very decorative industrial object that can still be used as a pulley.
The pulleys have a very beautiful wood grain. The wood is well preserved (certainly the wood of the small pulley). The wheels still rotate smoothly on their axles. The iron is nicely weathered.
Very nice is the wood with the sheen on it. The wooden wheels and the forged iron rivets with which the wooden frame is constructed give these pulleys a atmospheric and captivating appearance! The wood and the weathered metal are preserved and have a nice sheen.
Both pulleys are still 100% original and seem as if they have just been taken from an old harbor scene. In any interior these ship’s tools are decorative items and conversation pieces, but they can also be used to hang kitchen utensils, or a coat rack, or a lamp.
The pulleys are packed professionally and insured for shipment.
