The research confirms that Y. Hayashi Nikko is not a fantasy name and also not a modern furniture brand. There exist several documented and traded pieces with exactly this stamp, including carved Japanese side tables from the early 20th century. Some of these pieces were even traded with a connection to the famous export furniture for the London department store Liberty’s.

Moreover, the tradition of wood carving in Nikko stems from a centuries-old craft tradition that goes back to the artisans who worked at the famous Tōshō-gū Shrine. Dragon motifs and floral carvings are typical for this so-called Nikko-bori tradition.

That doesn’t automatically mean your table is a museum piece, but the likelihood is now quite high that it’s a genuine Japanese artisan piece and not later mass-produced ware.
