Biography
Tomas Schmit (1943–2006) was a German artist, author, and one of the central figures of the Fluxus movement as well as of conceptual art in the German-speaking world. He studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and achieved international recognition early on through his collaborations with George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, and Wolf Vostell.
Schmit’s work encompasses texts, drawings, objects, actions, scores, and conceptual works. The focus is on a radical reduction of artistic means as well as a precise, often ironic examination of language, perception, time, and everyday life. Especially his text-based works and Fluxus scores are regarded as key works of conceptual art from the 1960s and 1970s.
Tomas Schmit understood art as an open thinking process and as a critique of traditional art concepts and institutions. His works are today held in major museums, archives, and international collections and occupy a significant position within Fluxus history and European conceptual art.
