Stele of Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音 dated 1747 - Granite - Japan - Mid Edo period

A charming mid-Edo period stone votive stele depicting Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音, one of the esoteric manifestations of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Kannon is carved in relief, seated in the characteristic contemplative pose with the head gently inclined towards the raised hand, ggiving the sculpture a quiet and deeply contemplative character. Nyoirin Kannon takes its name from the nyoi 如意, the wish-fulfilling jewel (cintāmaṇi), and rin 輪, the Wheel of the Dharma (dharmacakra). This form of Kannon became associated with the fulfilment of wishes, spiritual protection and salvation. The stele bears a dated inscription corresponding to Enkyō 4 延享四年 (1747), placing it firmly in the mid-Edo period. Stone images such as this were erected as devotional monuments at temples, along pilgrimage routes, beside roads and within village communities. Exposed to the elements for generations, their weathered surfaces have become an integral part of their character. s.
