The Lettera 25 was designed in 1972 by Mario Bellini. Like the Olivetti Dora, the Olivetti Valentine and the Olivetti Lettera DL, it can be traced back mechanically to the Lettera 32, which was put on sale in 1963 and designed by Marcello Nizzoli. 

Released together with the Olivetti Lettera 35, the machine has a simple and essential style, and was intended for a young audience.

The Olivetti Lettera 25 is a typewriter with pressure writing levers. The typebars strike a red or black inked ribbon, which is positioned between the typebar and the paper by a lever whenever a key is pressed. This prints the corresponding symbol on the sheet of paper behind it. A lever located at the top right of the keyboard can be used to check the position of the tape and select the colour black, red or without ink (in the case of copies with carbon paper or for the preparation of ink matrices for the copying machine). The ribbon rolls with each press of the keys and automatically changes the winding direction when one of the two spools on which it is rolled has reached the end. Two mechanical sensors, situated next to each spool, move when the ribbon is put under tension (indicating the end of the ribbon) and reverse the winding direction.

The Italian version of the machine uses the QZERTY layout, although versions with different key arrangements have been produced according to the language to which they were destined. With 43 alphanumeric keys for a total of 86 signs. In addition to these, the keyboard includes a space bar, two keys to set the capital letters, a key to block the capital letters, a lever to exceed the set margins, a key to go backwards by one character, a lever to set the tabs and a key (red) to pass from one tab to another.
