Geweimeubels waren een van de populaire nieuwigheden van de grote tentoonstelling van de industrieën van alle naties in Londen in 1851. Een nieuwe lifestlye-trend was geboren en de ambitieuze Europese middenklasse zorgde voor een fantastische opleving. Een van de eerste ontwerpers die wordt genoemd is de Duitse hoornsnijder en meubelfabrikant H.F.C. Rampendahl, die met zijn geweimeubelen enthousiaste successen boekte op verschillende wereldtentoonstellingen. In de nasleep begon men geweimeubelen in serie te vervaardigen.
