Enrico Bordoni is a renowned Italian artist who has made a significant impact on the contemporary art scene. He is known for his unique style that blends vibrant colors and strong lines to create bold, distorted figures that evoke a sense of emotion and depth. Bordoni's works often depict the human experience of alienation and solace, exploring the struggle of human relationships and the contrast between the accepted and rejected. Bordoni's art is characterized by his use of tempera and oil, which he blends to create a unique texture and depth in his pieces. His most notable works include La Straniera (The Stranger), L'Autore (The Author), and La Madre (Mother), which have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. These works are part of a series that depicts the same or similar figures multiple times, each painting representing a different interpretation or point of view. In addition to his paintings, Bordoni has also created several large-scale sculptures in bronze and stone, such as L'Aquila (The Eagle) and La Pieta (The Pieta). These sculptures are characterized by their intricate details and powerful presence, which evoke a sense of awe and reverence in those who view them. Overall, Enrico Bordoni is a highly respected artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of contemporary art. His unique style and powerful works have earned him a place among the most influential artists of his generation. Born in Altare near Savona in Liguria, Bordoni studied engineering in Genoa for two years, before turning to painting. In 1931, he moved to Florence, where he worked in the theatre with Max Reinhart, Jacques Copeau, and Giulio Salvini. On his return to his home town in 1935, he staged a series of open-air theatre performances. Bordoni also worked in the field of decorative arts. A set of glasses designed for Sandro Bormioli won him a prize at the sixth Milan Triennale in 1936. The subjects of his pre-war paintings were Florence, the Tuscan landscape, and still - lives. Bordoni spent the war in Monferrato, and began teaching at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan in 1945, where he was to remain for 18 years.
His transition to abstraction has yet to be charted, but it is likely that a visit to Paris was significant for him. His paintings of 1949-50 have strong black outlines that recall the contemporary work of Atlan. Bordoni was a founder member in 1948 of M.A.C. (Movimento Arte Concreta), of which he served as President from 1957 - 58. His paintings were often close - toned and were filled with chiaroscuro in a style that can be compared both with CoBrA and the constructivist tradition. In the 1950s, Bordoni's pictures became more sculptural and filled with overlapping cut out shapes painted in single colours. His zoomorphic, 'figure dentate', can be seen as brutalised Arps.
On the closure of M.A.C. in 1958, Bordoni became one of the first Italian artists to produce monochrome paintings, in black or white, or bichrome black and white. These he called 'Arkè'. Bordoni moved closer to art informel, before, in 1961, he began to combine upright bands of raised or incised patterned decoration with areas of a single matt acid or candied colour. This use of relief has been compared with the work of the Stuttgart painter, Werner Schreib (1925 -69). The elements of the decoration, circles, squares, and oblongs, appear to derive from Jugendstil, in particular, from the paintings of Klimt. Among his contemporaries, Bordoni can be compared with the Austrian Hundertwasser, and for his increasing interest in raw material with Burri. In 1963 he became a Professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. There, his major work was inspired by the flood that inundated the city in 1966.
