Beautiful Kongo Yombe style maternity figure. So-called "pfemba" maternity figures represent an idealized Kongo archetype of historical feminine beauty. Her raised scarifications in geometric patterns on the back and the intricate hairstyle/head adornment representing a knitted bonnet (or "mpu") suggests that this statue represents a woman of high rank. Hard and heavy food with blackish-reddish patina. Abrasions on base, back and right arm/side. Field collected in in the Mayombe region of Bas-Congo province, DR Congo.
