Robert Capa. Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, 1936

Universally known as The Falling Soldier, this photograph by Robert Capa is one of the most iconic images in the history of photography. Taken during the Spanish Civil War on September 5, 1936, it captures the very instant a Republican militiaman falls, shot on the Córdoba front.

With the inscription "Robert Capa copyright Magnum Photos" in the lower right corner. It is a digital print on 10" x 7.5" glossy photo paper, in good condition.

First published in Vu magazine in 1936, it went almost unnoticed until LIFE Magazine featured it in 1937, catapulting Capa to worldwide fame as the most celebrated war photographer of the 20th century. Questions about its authenticity have lingered for decades, yet this very controversy has only reinforced its symbolic power: an image representing human fragility in the face of war’s violence, still provoking debate and emotion nearly a century later.

More than a document, it is a universal symbol of war, death, and the photographer’s gaze that “got too close,” as Capa himself famously said. Owning this piece means incorporating into a collection one of the foundational pillars of modern photojournalism.

Robert Capa is considered one of the greatest masters of photography, co-founder of Magnum Photos alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David “Chim” Seymour. His legacy stands alongside other key names such as Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, Elliott Erwitt, Walker Evans, W. Eugene Smith, Philippe Halsman, Diane Arbus, Eve Arnold, Robert Doisneau, Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon, Steve McCurry, Ai Weiwei, Sebastião Salgado, Irving Penn, Andreas Gursky, among many others.
