Les masques Lega sont utilisés lors des rites d'initiation de la société Bwami. Celle-ci est ouverte aux hommes et aux femmes, masques dont le centre enduit de kaolin est taillé en cœur. Le passage d'un grade indiqué l'acquisition d'une certaine sagesse et morale individuelle.
La société Bwami organisait la sociale et politique. Il existait jusqu'à sept niveaux d'initiation, chacun associé à des emblèmes.
Suite à leur exode d'Ouganda au cours du 17 ème siècle, les Lega se sont installés sur la rive ouest de la rivière Lualaba, en RDC.
