A rare 19th-century lens on place, identity and people: this work captures 19th-century Mexico in word and image, blending lived experience with striking visual engravings.

Sartorius (1796–1872) was a German writer, economist, and landowner who settled in Mexico in the early 19th century. He purchased and managed the Hacienda El Mirador in Veracruz, becoming deeply involved in Mexican life. His writings reflect both admiration and Eurocentric critique of Mexican society. He is best remembered for his detailed cultural and social observations in his book Mexiko.


Rugendas (1802–1858) was a German painter and illustrator known for documenting Latin America’s people, landscapes, and cultures. Influenced by Alexander von Humboldt, he traveled across Brazil, Mexico, and the Andes, creating ethnographic and romanticized artworks. His illustrations offer rare visual insights into 19th-century Latin America and are featured prominently in Sartorius’s book.


The book is not just a travelogue but a deep and nuanced look at Mexican society, its ethnic diversity, geography, and daily life—seen through the eyes of a European who lived within it. Sartorius offers vivid descriptions of indigenous communities, mestizo traditions, colonial legacies, and natural landscapes, with a focus on cultural contrasts and local customs.
It reflects both curiosity and the biases of an European settler.
The book is richly illustrated with 18 steel engravings based on original drawings by Moritz Rugendas, adding powerful visual context to Sartorius’s narrative. These images capture scenes of Mexican city life, rural labor, dress, and architecture, giving readers a rare 19th-century view of a changing nation.
