This stunning ashtray is a vibrant example of Aldo Londi’s iconic Rimini Blu series, produced by Bitossi Ceramiche in Italy during the mid-20th century. Instantly recognizable by its deep blue glaze and intricate hand-carved detailing, this piece exemplifies the artistry and texture that made Londi’s work legendary.

The ashtray features two bands of geometric reliefs—one with delicate starburst motifs and the other with deeply carved “X” patterns, separated by finely incised lines. Surrounding the rim and base are meticulously punctuated dot patterns, adding a tactile rhythm to the surface. The glaze, a mix of turquoise, cobalt, and hints of emerald, creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the textured surface.

The top includes a classic cigarette rest, glazed in contrasting black, offering both form and function. The base is hand-marked with model number 429 and stamped Italy, verifying its authenticity and origin.

Though originally designed for smoking, this collectible piece is often used today as a small decorative bowl or accent object. It’s a perfect example of Aldo Londi’s genius: blending rustic tradition with modernist beauty in a way that continues to resonate with collectors and design lovers alike.

Aldo Londi (1911–2003) was a visionary Italian ceramist whose work helped shape the landscape of 20th-century ceramics. Born in Montelupo Fiorentino, Italy, Londi’s journey in ceramics began early—by the age of 11, he was already apprenticing at a local ceramic factory. His creative path was interrupted by World War II, during which he spent five years as a prisoner of war in South Africa. Remarkably, this time deepened his artistic abilities through painting and sculpture.

After the war, Londi returned to Italy and became the artistic director of Bitossi Ceramiche in 1946. Over three decades, he transformed the company’s identity, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern, experimental design. His style drew on historical motifs and rustic art, but always with a fresh, contemporary twist.

Londi’s most iconic creation is the “Rimini Blu” collection, introduced in 1959. These striking pieces are immediately recognizable for their vibrant turquoise-blue glaze and intricate, abstract geometric patterns. The textures and minute carvings on each piece create a tactile, light-catching surface that evokes the shimmering sea. The collection was named after the seaside town of Rimini, reflecting a mid-century Italian lifestyle admired around the world.

Today, Rimini Blu is celebrated globally and remains in production, a testament to Londi’s timeless design and artistic innovation. His legacy lives on in homes, galleries, and collections, forever capturing the spirit of Italian creativity in rich, ceramic blue.
