Presentando curve e motivi armoniosi, questa maschera maschile appartiene alla società iniziatica Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe.
Si riteneva che i membri di questa società avessero poteri magici, conferendo loro, di fatto, il ruolo di controllo sociale e politico sulla popolazione, allo scopo di mantenere la gerarchia e l'élite politica in atto, ma anche di combattere gli abusi di potenza.
Chi lo indossa imporrebbe la sua autorità attraverso l'espressività e la presenza intimidatoria della maschera Kifwebe.
Maschere di questo tipo sono apparse in eventi come cerimonie funebri, incoronazioni, cosi come nei riti di iniziazione dei ragazzi.
L'alta cresta sommitale indica chiaramente che si tratta di una maschera maschile, considerata "senior", in contrapposizione ad una maschera crestale più discreta considerata "giovanile".
Al centro di alcuni capi Songye situati a ovest di Lomami, sembra che le maschere maschili di Kifwebe mantenessero l'ordine all'interno di un'area riservata al Bukishi, un importante rito di iniziazione scomparso nel XX secolo.
