Sol LeWitt

Sol LeWitt (°1928) is in Nederland waarschijnlijk het meest bekend van zijn wandschilderingen. Die reputatie kan de afgelopen jaren alleen maar zijn toegenomen, want hij schonk nogal wat van deze werken aan Nederlandse musea. Eind 2001 werden zeven muurschilderingen door de kunstenaar aangeboden aan het Haags Gemeentemuseum. Twee jaar geleden werd Wall Drawing #1084 voor het eerst in het Stedelijk Museum geïnstalleerd, nadat de kunstenaar het al geschonken had. En dit jaar gaf de Amerikaan drie werken aan het Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, waaronder de monumentale schildering Wall Drawing # 801: Spiral, die in 1996 speciaal voor de koepeltoren van het museum werd gemaakt.

Een ander voorbeeld is de serie Cock Fight Dance, die bestaat uit 48 kleurenfoto’s die oorspronkelijk naast elkaar werden gepresenteerd. Onderwerp van de serie is een strijd tussen twee hanen, die op zeker moment wordt verstoord door een kat die maar al te graag wil meevechten. In Den Haag wordt de sequentie gepresenteerd als een reeks opeenvolgende dia’s, waardoor het werk eigenlijk een schokkerig filmpje is geworden. De onverwachte wending aan het einde van de serie, als de poes het gevecht komt verstoren, geeft het geheel bovendien een humoristische en narratieve draai die niet lijkt te passen bij Sol LeWitts strenge, conceptuele uitgangspunten.

Boekje is heel, maar wel gebruikt en plakband is kwetsbaar. Zie foto’s.
