Groot en zeldzaam eikenhouten Corpus. Frankrijk, ca 1400. 

Typerend snijwerk voor de toen heersende stijl: vrij plat en zonder veel beweging. Alles terug gebracht tot de ware essentie. Christus  realistisch weergegeven. Het lijden van de Zoon van God waar een gewone sterveling zich sterk mee kon identificeren. Lendedoek en het haar vrij schematisch gesneden en gestoken. Alles doet wat hoekig aan. Het Hoofd van Christus met gevlochten doornenkroon en baardje hangend naar rechts. Het lijf mager en de voeten over elkaar geplaatst. 

Vrij groot sculptuur: 62 cm. Uiteraard afkomstig van een altaarstuk uit kerk, klooster of privé kapel. 

Conditie: armen missend. Voeten niet origineel. Vermoedelijk ca. 1900 bijgemaakt. Hoofd met uitholling. Het hout is sterk versteend zoals ook hoort bij de leeftijd. Resten van polychromie. 

Een bijzonder werk waarvan de ontstaansgeschiedenis ligt in een Christelijk Europa bijna zonder verdere beeldcultuur. Een dergelijk sculptuur moet de beschouwer sterk ontroerd hebben. Van dit kunstwerk ben je dan ook meer hoeder dan bezitter. Men heeft de plicht het te koesteren en er zorg voor te dragen totdat de tijd gekomen is het weer door te geven.  Tastbaar stuk Europese cultuurgeschiedenis met de wortels in het Frankrijk van de late middeleeuwen.
