"Ruinous Gardens" is a photo collection by Tomatsu Shomei, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. His work focuses on Nagasaki and Okinawa, always maintaining a keen awareness of current issues and an insatiable desire to explore the original image of Japan and the Japanese people. He has produced numerous masterpieces, including "11:02 NAGASAKI," "Japan," "I am a king," and "Pencil of the Sun," and has been highly acclaimed worldwide, with numerous exhibitions held in Europe and the United States. This collection, originally published in 1987 and edited by renowned art and photography critic Shunji Ito, features works from the 1950s in a random layout, ignoring chronological order. Focusing on abandoned buildings and abstract works, the book beautifully captures Tomatsu's sharp perspective, observational eye, and exceptional artistry. The end of the book features an intriguing text by Shunji Ito, and includes 80 illustrations, both black-and-white and color. The book is designed by Hitoshi Suzuki.
