Leonard Freed's seminal work documenting the work of the NYPD in the 70's in captivating black & white images. This is the rare first edition and first printing (not to be confused with the later reedition).

The book is in very good condition, interior clean and unmarked, firm binding, outside with just a slight crease on the top right of the book cover, not affecting pages with images.

Leonard Freed described Police Work as the "gritty reality" of average people doing a job that was often "boring, sometimes corrupting, sometimes dangerous and ugly and unhealthy". His work, particularly the Police Work series on the NYPD from 1972–1979, documented both the mundane and violent aspects of the profession during a period of high crime and social unrest, portraying officers as working-class individuals navigating a turbulent era. Freed sought to understand the humanity of police officers, their relationships with the public, and the psychological toll of their work.
