La représentation des serpents est la thématique centrale dans l'art du métal chez les Dogon. On retrouve aussi dans une moindre mesure la tortue, le caïman, le caméléon et la panthère.

Protecteurs de la famille et des cultures, les serpents sont ambivalents, représentant à la fois le jour, la lumière, le bien, la transparence, mais aussi symbolisant les forces de l'obscurité, le mal et la sorcellerie.
Le nombre de têtes attribué à chaque objet est proportionnel à l'étendue de son pouvoir, chaque tête représentant un champ particulier de ce pouvoir.

Les spirales sont des symboles d'éternité et seraient un signe d'appartenance à la famille royale.

Tous ces objets qui appartenaient, semble-t-il, à des personnages de haute lignée, étaient conservés dans des sanctuaires ou enterrés
