Description from the seller
Rare original edition of the 'Decretum Gratiani' revised by Antoine de Mouchy (1494-1574), known in Latin as Democharès.
When he begins to edit the Decree, Mouchy has been a doctor of theology for seven years; he has already distinguished himself by publishing commentaries on Aristotle, Pierre Lombard, Thomas Aquinas, and in 1544, at Poncet Le Preux, he issued an edition of the works of Anselm of Canterbury. He still teaches at the Sorbonne college and is considered among the prominent scholars, but he has not yet become known as the formidable defender of the faith that he would become in the late 1550s.
Published at the address in Paris by Charlotte Guillard, a French printer of the first half of the 16th century, who knew how to surround herself with 'text hunters,' erudite specialists who brought her manuscripts. The catalog to date would include nearly 190 editions published under her mark: 'apud Carolam Guillard, sub Sole aureo.'
Copy bound in a solid ivory vellum binding, with a smooth spine adorned with the title in gold letters, and red edges.
Carefully maintained impression, beautiful engraved initials. Interior in excellent condition of freshness, browned title page, slightly rubbed last pages, free of foxing or very rare. Some rubbing and small stains on the covers. A fine copy.
Antoine de Mouchy [Démocharès]
Collection of Decrees: from various and abundant ecclesiastical writers
Paris, Charlotte Guillard, 1547
17 x 11 cm; Index + Decretorum Canones (unpaginated) + 284 pages
