Description from the seller
Marinus Bies (1894–1975) was a Dutch painter from Aarle-Rixtel, best known as the 'painter of the Peel.' Mostly self-taught, he developed into a talented landscape painter under the influence of Herman Moerkerk and A.M. Gorter. From 1933, he worked full-time as an artist and captured the Brabant Peel landscape in atmospheric, often somber-toned paintings full of light and silence. His work shows a kinship with Flemish expressionism, where emotion and atmosphere are more important than realistic depiction.
In this painting, Bies captures the melancholic atmosphere of the Brabant countryside at dusk. At the center of the scene is a characteristic haystack, next to a simple farm that is half-hidden in the darkness. The sky is heavy and cloudy, but along the horizon, a strip of soft light still glows, evoking a moment of silence and anticipation.
Dimensions with frame: 61 x 81 cm
Dimensions without frame: 50 x 70 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we collaborate with restorers from the professional organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this service, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
